Random Book Musings: Do you get distracted easily while reading and what distracts you the most? #travelingsistersread #BookBloggers

I always have these random bookish questions that I’m curious about so I ask our Traveling Sisters a weekly (sometimes more) book related question. We thought it would be fun and interesting to take some of those questions to our blog and see what you all think or do. I hope that you will also join in on the discussion with us.

Norma’s random book question:

Do you get distracted easily while reading and what distracts you the most? Do you have any tips to share that work for you in order to lessen those distractions?

Total peace and quiet for me as I am easily distracted.

This never used to be a problem for me a few years back as I could read with the radio on, while others were watching TV and with any background noise of any kind. But, that isn’t the case any longer. I have to have total quiet as my mind wonders enough as it is while I am reading. Sometimes I just close the book when I notice that I am not fully taking everything in that I am reading and start again in a couple of minutes. That usually helps!

I would say that any type of talking is the most distracting for me.

My biggest distraction while reading is falling asleep.  I can read while the TV is on or talking is going on around me.  But other noises really distract me and it’s like an anxiety trigger to me.  Music is one of the biggest ones for me.  If there is noise around me I listen and read at the same time to drown out the noise.

Great question Norma! 💜

I can read through pretty much any noise. If I couldn’t, I wouldn’t be able to read as much as I do. Having young children means there is always noise in my house. Plus, I always have music on in the background throughout my day (one of the first things I do when I get up is put my Spotify playlist on). I actually find the background music comforting and easier to concentrate with. I choose my books wisely though – ones that I need to be in ‘full-concentration-mode’ for, I save for when the littles are in bed. Others I can read while they play or have their TV time.

Now to the best part. Your answers. Please join in our discussion and let us know your answer. We would love to hear from you!

  1. Very little distracts me while I’m reading, except really loud conversations if I’m at a café or a diner with my husband. Now, when I’m under my headphones, I’m only distracted by someone trying to get my attention. I’ve developed a habit of reading while the television is on so that’s not an issue. Maybe it comes from being able to get singularly focused because I was always used to a lot of noise at work and had to learn to read comprehensively despite all the chaos going on around me. And, a good book will block out everything.

  2. Oh yes, I get distracted easily. My kids and SO are the main culprits behind that. I will start to get into a book and bam, a fight breaks out or my SO starts talking to me about work. So, I wait to read until the kids are in bed and my SO is playing a video game.

      1. Its usually my 5 and 11 year old fighting. I won’t miss it either when they stop. It is!! I read an hour before I go to sleep (plus whatever I read on the couch) and it is so calming. Your welcome!! I love commenting and reading everyone’s replies!!

  3. I am easily distracted for sure! I used to be able to read in the car, with music playing or the tv on, etc. but not so much anymore. If any music is on, it has to be wordless or I lose concentration. When I find I cannot focus, sometimes I change spots; so if I am on the couch and can’t focus, maybe I will go outside on the porch, or trying reading in my bedroom instead. Sometimes that helps to refocus.

    This is great question though!

    1. What happened to those days, Samantha when we weren’t easily distracted? LOL Changing spots works for me too or just walking around for a few minutes…..or letting my mind go where it wants to and then getting back into it works too. Thanks so much for sharing, Samantha! I really look forward to hearing your thoughts! 🙂

  4. Talking or music or general background noise doesn’t usually bother me. But I do also watch tv while I’m reading and if it’s a show I’m interested in, I get really distracted from the book. Or sometimes I get so into the book I miss stuff on the show and have to rewind the same part 3 or 4 times to see what I miss.

  5. I get very distracted by TV, people talking, or music with lyrics. I think it’s because the words I’m hearing are competing with the words I’m trying to read. Since I am not alone in the house, I can’t control when another person is watching TV, etc. It’s a small house so no matter where I go, I’ll still hear it. My solution is to either turn on my white noise machine or instrumental music. I can read through any noise as long as there are no words involved.

    1. Eileen, you have just made me realize that I too can read with instrumental music or white noise in the background. I was reading tonight while my husband was watching YouTube videos and the sound was all just background music and I didn’t have a problem at all reading. Interesting! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! I always look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

  6. Absolutely nothing distracts me while reading which drives everyone around me nuts! I always have a book or my kindle in hand and read anywhere and everywhere possible. The rest of the world be damned as long as I have a book! 🙂

  7. I do get easily distracted! Mostly by the TV (although if there is sport on it doesn’t bother me so much). I also have to admit to getting distracted by my phone and the internet so I try and counteract that by putting my phone face down when I’m reading so I can’t be tempted by messages coming through! 😂

  8. I’m very easily distracted. Minimal noise. If I go somewhere public to read, I take ear plugs or wear my Beats in noise cancelling mode. When my children are awake, I don’t even try anymore, unless it’s a Readathon and I can lock myself in my room while my husband tends to them. Usually, I read in my room after the kids go to bed. If I can’t start by 8pm, I usually skip it because I’m likely to fall asleep. 🙂
