I always have these random bookish questions that I’m curious about so I ask our Traveling Sisters a weekly (sometimes more) book related question. We thought it would be fun and interesting to take some of those questions to our blog and see what you all think or do. I hope that you will also join in on the discussion with us.
Norma’s random book question:
Do you belong to any book subscription boxes and which one is your favourite? Also, do you belong to any other subscription boxes? If so, what product or item makes you the most excited when you open that box?
If you don’t belong to any subscription boxes I have another question for you to answer.
Where is your absolute favourite place to buy or look for books? And who is your favourite author and/or publisher?
Norma’s Answer
So I have been a member of FABFITFUN for quite a few years now and always look forward to when my box arrives. I would say the items that I get most excited about is when I receive journals or planners in them. I also like any fitness related items as well even though I might not use them they make me a little excited to see them. Oh, also I like water bottles, mugs, candles.
So I am a recent member of BoTM thanks to Kris who has kindly offered to ship my boxes to me here in Canada since they don’t ship outside of the United States. Let me tell you when I received my first box I was a little giddy and thought how fortunate I was to have the best book buddy ever! Thank you so much, Kris! You are the best!
I don’t really have a favourite place to look at or buy books from. Amazon is the most convenient though and I do love perusing NetGalley & Edelweiss.
I have a couple of favourite authors; Jodi Picoult & Lisa Gardner. But, I think that might have changed some since Goodreads though as I have added quite a few more authors to my list of favourites. I don’t really have a favourite publisher or offhand I can’t think of who it would be. I’ll come back and comment if I remember.
Brenda’s Answer
I don’t belong to any book subscription boxes. This may sound weird and let me know if it does. lol . I get a little anxious waiting for mail. The whole wondering when it will show up and waiting really stresses me out. So I don’t often buy from Amazon. I do like Book Outlet because of the amazing prices and have been known to order a bit too much from there according to my husband. So I will try to work through the anxiety of waiting for that. Also when I want a book I want it right now and don’t want to wait for it so my favorite place to shop for books is Indigo/Chapters. I do love the library too but there is that waiting for books again. lol
I do kind of wish the whole waiting for approval on NG would bother me a bit more than it does so I won’t exercise my finger so much by requesting so many titles.
Lindsay’s Answer
I would love to be a member of a monthly book mail subscription box, however, I really try to control my spending on books. I usually use my amazing local library along with NG/EW to get my books.
If I am purchasing a book, I usually buy online from The Book Outlet. I can have it delivered to the store which is super close to me for free which saves me paying shipping costs. Plus, their books are an AMAZING deal so it works out great!
Favourite author would be so hard to narrow down. I agree with you Norma – Jodi Picoult is a top favourite. Kate Morton. Kristin Hannah. Lisa Genova.
Christina’s Answer
I also don’t belong to any subscription plans. I’ve thought about doing book of the month because it look so fun but I’m also super cheap LOL!
I really love my local library, but my favorite place to just browse books is Half Price Books. I also enjoy NetGalley / EW but I have a hard time browsing online versus in the store!
Now to the best part. Your answers. Please join in our discussion and let us know your answer. We would love to hear from you!

They are based in the UK so not sure what shipping is like to other countries, but bet it won’t be small. That’s an issue, I’d love to get others but just can’t justify the postage…..postage or eat? 😂

I don’t belong to any subscription boxes at the present time. I don’t buy many brand new books because I read so fast I feel like it’s a waste of money but if it’s something I really want and can’t wait for the library, I usually order from Amazon. My favourite place to get books is from the library. Also the “Friends of the Library” non-profit group runs a used book store right next to the main library and they sell donated books, some very recent, and books which the library has withdrawn from circulation for $3, $4 and $5. I could spend hours in there and probably leave with a trunkful but I try and limit myself to one visit every 3 or 4 weeks and 1 or 2 books at a time. I already have a bunch to read … it seems once I own them I tend to save them, not sure what for!

I love Amazon like everyone else but I do have a book subscription from mills and boon (which my mother has and I may borrow one every now and then 🙄) but they also do a HQ subscription which they send thrillers and others but not romance that comes once a month and it’s exciting because you can’t find out what they are sending 🤗 it’s like Christmas once a month.

I think that is why I love subscription boxes so much is because it is such a surprise and so exciting to see what is in that box!

I don’t belong to a subscription club but after reading all details of the plans you all belong to….might just join one!

I used to belong to quite a few subscription boxes but had to cut back…..I thought I had to belong to them all or else I was missing out! Plus, I had to drive to the States once a month to pick up my load of boxes. It was getting a little costly.

good question! i don’t belong to any book subscription as well and i’m glad to know that i’m not alone. i feel they are costly. i love seeing those lovely book goodies but i would rather buy more books than spending it on other bookish things. i prefer amazon as there’s not much options for Indian market.

I think they are a little costly as well for what you get and I would love to surprise myself every month with a subscription box made by me to me! LOL

I think I like the thrill of the hunt too much to do a subscription – you know, you hunt for it at the library or the book shop or used book sellers. Okay, maybe I’m just chep 🙄

Unfotunately, I don’t. I’m a bargain hunter and truth is, I’m SUPER picky with book selections. I also hate surprises..I am on a need-to-know basis. LOL.

Yes, I can definitely see why subscription boxes wouldn’t work out all that well for you! hehehe
That is interesting that you don’t like surprises. I would say that when I was much younger I disliked surprises very much but as I’ve gotten older I kind of like them. Thanks so much for joining in on the discussion! 🙂

I can relate to Brenda, I used to work in a business mail company and worked directly with the post office getting things out and believe me after seeing how they operate getting things in the mail stresses me out too and I’m always wondering if it will actually get here.

I kind of chuckled at your comment, Carrie…..I am a Postmaster and so look forward to receiving my mail everyday as usually there are book surprises for me! LOL

Hello ladies! I’m a member of Book And A Brew here in the U.K. and they’re wonderful. You get a hardback and a box of tea (which is always delicious) every month. I’d love to be part of more but it just gets too expensive! 😂

Oh that box sounds wonderful, Beth! I’d love to be a member of more as well but I agree it gets a little pricey. Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂

I do not belong to any book box subscription services, but I did join Kindle Unlimited last month and am enjoying the read and listen books I have been getting. I absolutely love the library and used book sales. I can always pick up some good books that way. I have too many authors that I enjoy to pick just one. I will say Lisa Scottoline is one of my go to authors, I read all her books, legal thrillers, suspense and her humourous books she writes with her daughter. With all the new authors I have been introduced to from netgalley and blogging, my author list is huge!

My favourite author list since NetGalley and blogging has grown quite a bit too, Carla! I love how my tastes have changed in my books as of late. I’ve always read different genres but haven’t read as many Historical fiction is the past and now I am absolutely loving that genre!

It is a good one. I have read so many WWII books since Netgalley and many are about events that I was not aware of.

I think that is why I am enjoying Historical Fiction so much is exactly for that reason Carla!

Love these posts! No subscription boxes for me. I’m too cheap and I don’t like spending money on something that’s a “mystery”. 😉 I used to love to browse at Barnes & Noble, but then we moved and I either have to drive 40 minutes to get to a B&N or shop at Books-a-million…and I’d rather not. So, I mostly browse on Goodreads and Edelweiss. I love, love, love looking through the publisher catalogs to see what’s coming out. Otherwise, I browse the library.

So glad to hear that you love these posts, Myndi! I actually don’t have the patience to browse through the publisher catalogs and I so wish that I would though! Browsing the library is fun though! Thanks so much for sharing and leaving a comment! I loved reading it! 🙂
