Traveling Sisters Group Read with Kaceey, Diane, Jennifer, Jan, and Holly
Tidbit: For all of you that might be wondering why the Traveling Sisters continually mention “coulee” in our reviews it is because our blog name is Two Sisters Lost in a Coulee Reading and I live in the country and my ranch is surrounded by coulees on three sides of us. It is beautiful country and the coulees are so peaceful and wonderful to look at and so easy to wander and get lost in the beauty of them. I have been known to take long walks in the coulee while reading a book.
THE GOOD DAUGHTER by KARIN SLAUGHTER produced quite the discussion with all of us and in the end left us having split feelings, with some of us in the lush coulee, dry coulee, and leaving the coulee all together.
The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter is a dark, intense, compelling, and disturbing thriller novel that had an intriguing side to it with the family dynamics within the storyline that we all quite enjoyed. The relationships between some of the characters was very touching and another great aspect to this novel. However, for some of us this wasn’t enough to balance the graphic violent details and save them from leaving the coulee or wishing that they had.
KARIN SLAUGHTER delivers a violent and graphic story here repeating the horrific violence that was hard for all of us to take. She digs deep within the multi-layers of the story and really knows how to create and work some very shocking moments for her readers. Some of the scenes were retold a few times through the different characters memories and perspectives which was a little repetitive and unnecessary for some sisters leaving them in the dry coulee. We thought the retelling didn’t need to include every single disturbing detail again just the things that were relevant to the story. Some of us give high praise to Karin Slaughter for the shocking moments that she delved deep to achieve which did keep some of us in the lush coulee.
Some parts of it seemed to to be so drawn out and we really had a hard time staying interested and focused while reading this one. Although, once things did start happening and some of those “wow” shocking moments happened some of us found it so gripping, exciting, and hard to put down and then at other times we struggled with the writing which was frustrating for us
The stereotypes within the storyline weighed heavy on some of us making the story even more disturbing for them.
Warning due to the heavy graphic violence as the organizers of the Traveling Sisters group reads Brenda and I strongly recommend this one with caution and advise readers that this isn’t the one to test out your curiosity, tolerance level or limitations if you are have any doubts. This might be one for you to feel totally confident in with your limitations before reading. Some of us really enjoy Karin Slaughter and absolutely loved Pretty Girls and didn’t think this one was as good as that one or some of her other novels.
